What is Cylinder Hydrostatic Testing?
United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) has industry standard regulations for high pressure cylinders that must be subjected to non-destructive testing procedures to confirm the integrity of the unit. Each cylinder has its own testing schedule that is required by the industry-standard methods of requalifying or recertifying that can be done by hydrostatic testing. This process involves visual examinations of the cylinders externally and internally and a water pressure test that will confirm the ability of the cylinder to hold pressure.
Code of Regulations and Cylinder Requirements
U.S. DOT's Code of Regulations, Title 49 CFR, Section 180.205 has requirements to periodically hydrostatic test each DOT cylinder. The testing schedule for each of these cylinder requalifications are determined by the materials used to manufacture each unit. Some common cylinders for compressed gases include steel, aluminum and composite wrapped.
